Chapter Thirteen
Cece
Vesex sent word that the new ship had arrived. We had spent the morning moving all of our containers to a locked storage area inside the shipyard. After lugging everything back and forth, I felt lucky that only one box was mine. Moving out of a spaceship was way worse than moving out of an apartment. Everyone had done a final walk-through of our ship before signing off that it was clear.
The whole crew was headed over to finalize the trade. Everyone was wearing shapeless caftans that hid their tails. We all had on separate hoods and face coverings too. I wasnât sure if they had wrapped their tails or not.
The mood was subdued. I had gotten a few hellos, but that was it. No one was chatting today. I tried not to take it personally because I noticed that none of them were talking to each other either. It was a contrast to yesterday when we were visiting the markets.
Vesex led us through a maze of streets toward a private shipyard. When I asked why there were two shipyards, Hix quickly answered, âItâs for permanent residents,â before turning back around.
Very few of the shops we walked by were open. A few food vendors were set up for the day. Most of the aliens we walked by had their heads down, ignoring everyone.
We were the largest group on the street. I felt like we stood out. None of the guys seemed tense or bothered. They kept their heads up as they made their way to our destination as if it were any other day.
The overall somber feeling of the morning was making me anxious. As we walked, I kept my eyes out for anything suspicious. I was becoming paranoid. Any gaze that lingered too long came off as sinister. I couldnât help tracking every camera pointed at the street. I felt myself shifting away from large groups. I felt like something bad was going to happen.
When we got to the private yard, I saw a familiar alien standing beside a ship. It was the guy from the bar. When he saw us, he raised a hand in greeting. He looked very excited, bouncing from foot to foot.
He wasnât standing alone. A similar-looking alien was shuffling from foot to foot next to him. Both of them were roughly the same height with purple-colored skin. For all I knew, they could be brothers.
âAfternoon! I was worried you wouldnât make it,â the first alien said before we stopped in front of the pair.
While Vesex talked to them, I looked around. The ship was different from ours. It was small and narrow. There were new parts on it that shone in the sun.
âHow do you want to do this?â The new alien asked, suddenly getting my attention.
âLetâs tour the ship, and if everything is in order, we can initiate the trade,â Vesex answered.
The first guy got excited and started lowering the ramp at the back of the ship. The new guy got fidgety. He glanced around.
